HC Deb 04 October 1939 vol 351 cc1983-4W
Mr. Stephen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he can state the number of mothers and children, respectively, evacuated from the schools in the Camlachie Parliamentary Division of Glasgow, and the number in each case who have since returned to their homes?

Mr. Colville:

1,601 mothers and 8,078 children were evacuated from the schools in the Camlachie Parliamentary Division of Glasgow. I have no precise information as to the number either of mothers or of children who have returned to their homes in this division, but as regards the general trend I would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave on 27th September to a question on the same subject by the hon. Member for the Maryhill Division of Glasgow (Mr. Davidson).

Mr. Stephen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the duties of a liaison officer in connection with the evacuation scheme; the number of such officers in Scotland; and whether they have all been recruited from the staff of school inspectors?

Mr. Colville:

The main duties of liaison officers are to report to the Department of Health on the actual progress of evacuation, to be available for consultation by local authorities on any points of difficulty that may arise, to give local authorities all possible assistance and to keep the Department closely in touch with conditions in the receiving areas. There are 32 liaison officers, one for each of the five sending areas and one for each of the 28 receiving counties, except Kinross, which is grouped along with Perthshire. Originally all liaison officers were inspectors of schools, but recently two of these officers were withdrawn for other duties and replaced by inspectors of the Department of Health. All liaison officers combine their work with their other normal duties.
