HC Deb 04 October 1939 vol 351 cc1986-7W
Mr. T. Williams

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that certain building societies who had undertaken to advance loans on dwellings which are in course of construction are withholding such mortgages; and, in view of the problem thereby created, will he consult with such societies in regard to these cases?

Captain Crookshank:

I assume the hon. Member to refer to cases where a society is under no legal obligation to make a loan. In such cases it would not be proper for me to bring pressure to bear upon the society on a matter which is entirely within its own discretion.
