HC Deb 14 November 1939 vol 353 cc582-3W
Mr. Benjamin Smith

asked the Minister of Shipping what standards of comfort, sanitation and cleanliness are to govern crews' quarters in new ship construction; and whether the Department of the Ministry concerned with this important matter has been instructed to exercise maximum vigilance?

Sir J. Gilmour

The crews' quarters in new ship construction will have to comply with the Instructions at to the Survey of Masters and Crew Spaces which were issued by the Board of Trade in 1937; and I have no doubt that a high standard of cleanliness will be promoted by the agreement respecting cleanliness and comfort of crews' quarters which was adopted by the National Maritime Board in June last. The division of the Ministry of Shipping concerned in this matter is fully alive to its importance.
