HC Deb 14 November 1939 vol 353 cc546-7W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will state in round figures the amount of money that has been expended from rates and taxes since 1900 on the medical welfare and educational services of Great Britain?

Sir J. Simon

The preparation of figures in answer to my hon. Friend's question for even a single year would involve so much labour, research and calculation, owing to the diversity of services which include elements of medical welfare and education, that in present circumstances I do not feel that I should be justified in instructing the Departments to undertake the task.
