HC Deb 14 November 1939 vol 353 cc566-7W
Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether, in view of the lower consumption of butter, and the need for safeguarding the nation's health, he will consider the compulsory vitaminisation of all margarine?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

A large proportion of the margarine for domestic consumption is already vitaminised. I see no reason at present for making vitaminisation compulsory.

Sir E. Makins

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what is the approximate total consumption of butter in the United Kingdom per week at the present time; and what will be the estimated consumption under rationing on the assumption that all the population consumes the permitted supply?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

The estimated requirements to meet ration coupons, on the basis of a ration of four ounces would be about 5,000 tons a week. This figure does not include supplies to the Services, caterers, institutions and other miscellaneous purposes. The present rate of distribution of butter by the Ministry is of a similar order.
