HC Deb 09 November 1939 vol 353 c445W
Mr. Maclean

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that the position of the dependants of recruits who were receiving unemployment benefit immediately prior to their enlistment, and who make allowances to their parents, is likely to be prejudiced by the action taken in the case of Mrs. Craig, 218, Broomloan Road, Govan, a widow with three other young children, who received the whole of her son's unemployment benefit, and has been disqualified from receiving any dependant's allowance on the ground that the weekly payments to her by her son before he joined the Army were not sufficient to qualify her for a dependant's allowance; and whether he will make careful and sympathetic inquiry into this case as it involves a principle that may have far-reaching effect?

Sir V. Warrender

If the hon. Member will be good enough to let me have the soldier's name, unit and Army number, I will have inquiries made.
