HC Deb 02 November 1939 vol 352 cc2144-5W
Mr. Riley

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can make a statement on the Government's policy regarding the promotion of improved trade relations between Great Britain and Russia and with the Governments of the Balkan countries?

Mr. Stanley

It is, of course, the constant wish of His Majesty's Government to improve their trade relations with the Soviet Union as with other neutral countries, but I am not at present able to add anything to the reply I gave to the hon. Member for the Forest of Dean (Mr. Price) on 12th October. The best means of maintaining and the possibility of expanding trade between the United Kingdom and the Balkan countries is being discussed with representatives of the respective countries, though I am not yet in a position to make any announcement on the matter.

Mr. Riley

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can state the value of the import and export trade, respectively, between Great Britain and Russia from the outbreak of war, to the nearest possible date?

Mr. Stanley

The publication of monthly particulars of trade with individual countries has been suspended during the period of the war, as this information may be of value to the enemy.
