HC Deb 02 November 1939 vol 352 c2130W
Mr. Leonard

asked the Minister of Supply whether he will consider ways and means of providing that all tenders for Government requirements shall be quoted f.o.r. at works or nearest railway station and so eliminate the factor of freightage from contractors' costs and concurrently create a special State fund from which transport charges will be provided?

Mr. Burgin

The practice of putting transport contracts out to tender has been in force for a considerable time and is being extended, so that the factor of freightage cost is eliminated from the contractor's cost in many cases. The last part of the question involves considerations which are outside my province.
