HC Deb 25 May 1939 vol 347 c2528W
Mr. David Adams

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will state the value of preferences granted to South African products and the value of customs preferences granted by South Africa to British goods for the financial year ending the 31st March, 1938, respectively?

Mr. Stanley

The approximate amount of rebate allowed in respect of goods consigned from the Union of South Africa and delivered for home consumption in the United Kingdom at preferential rates of duty during the 12 months ended March, 1938, was £2,374,000. The value of the preferential rebate of duty granted during this period in respect of United Kingdom produce imported into the Union of South Africa is not available, but during the calendar year 1937 it amounted to £1,547,000.
