asked the Secretary of State for War what is the average deduction on account of stoppages or other compulsory contribution from the 2s. per day drawn by a Regular Army recruit during his first six months' service?

The average deduction on account of compulsory stoppages is 7d. a week, made up as follows:

Contribution in respect of Widows', Orphans' and Old Age Pensions Insurance 5½d. a week.
Barrack damages 1½d. a week.

In addition, there are voluntary subscriptions to various Sports Clubs, Regimental and Old Comrades Associations, Regimental Journal, etc. Commanding Officers have been instructed that a soldier's total subscription in respect of these is not to exceed 3s. monthly.
