HC Deb 11 May 1939 vol 347 cc717-8W
Sir A. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he has any information as to the allowances made to the dependants of conscripts in France, Germany and Russia respectively?

Sir V. Warrender

In France, no allowances are paid from Army funds, but grants can be made from other sources.

In Germany, a married soldier receives varying rates of lodging allowance and children's allowance. The former varies according to the garrison, and the latter with the number of children.

It is believed that, in Russia, there is some reduction in taxation, an allowance for the birth of a child, and a right to retain civil lodgings and to return to civil employment.

Sir A. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for War what is the equivalent in. English money of the daily pay of conscripts in France, Germany and Russia?

Sir V. Warrender

I am advised that the present sterling equivalents of the daily rates of pay of conscripts, at the official rates of exchange, in France, Germany and Russia are approximately 1¼d., 10½d. and 2¾d. respectively.
