HC Deb 04 May 1939 vol 346 c2092W
Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

asked the Prime Minister whether he will state the circumstances under which the British steamer "Sagres" has been seized by a Japanese destroyer; and what action is being taken?

Mr. Butler

On 8th April the British steamer "Sagres," which had been loading salt at Chao-an Bay near Swatow, was boarded by Japanese naval units and taken to Bako in the Pescadores. Representations for the release of the vessel have been made both by the British naval authorities in China to the Japanese naval authorities there, and by His Majesty's Ambassador at Tokyo to the Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs.
