HC Deb 21 March 1939 vol 345 cc1134-5W
Mr. Henderson Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many houses were built or made available by de-crowding during each of the last 10 years for the relief of overcrowding in Scotland?

Mr. Colville

I regret that information is not available with regard to the relief of overcrowding prior to the passing; of the Act of 1935. The number of families transferred from overcrowded houses in each year since 1935 is as follows:

Year and number of families transferred from overcrowded houses.
1936 (9 months) 5,445
1937 10,534
1938 18,516
1939 (1 month) 1,408

This return is based on the number of families transferred from overcrowded houses to uncrowded accommodation in either new or existing houses, and does not include families rehoused from houses which were both unfit and overcrowded as such houses are dealt with under slum clearance procedure.
