HC Deb 20 March 1939 vol 345 cc919-20W
Sir R. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will consider the possibility of employing ex-service unemployed men in a labour corps, detachments of which would be detailed to various camps for Territorial and other training to provide the normal fatigue duties of the camp, thus enabling a larger proportion of soldiers attending camps for training to be available for actual training rather than that their time should be occupied with cleaning and tidying up the camp; and whether he is aware that under present arrangements over 10 per cent. of tbe total number attending camp are daily occupied with these routine duties to the detriment of their specialist training?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

The figure of 10 per cent. suggested in the last part of the question is not accepted as generally

Mr. Cross

I have been asked to reply. The Commercial Counsellor at Tokyo will be asked to endeavour to ascertain such information as may be available. Meanwhile, I shall be pleased to put at the disposal of my hon. Friend such unofficial information from Japanese sources as I possess.
