HC Deb 02 March 1939 vol 344 cc1484-5W
Mr. Viant

asked the Minister of Health how many cases of diphtheria have occurred in immunised or Schick-negative persons in Manchester since immunisation was introduced, with the ages of such cases; and how many deaths have been recorded amongst these?

Mr. Elliot

I am informed that up to the end of 1937 there were 149 cases of diphtheria in Manchester among persons who had received a full course of inoculation. Of these, 18 were under five years of age, 129 between five and 15 years and two over 15 years. There were three deaths As Schick testing is not carried out as a routine it is not possible to give the figures for Schick-negative persons.

Mr. Leach

asked the Minister of Health how many cases of diphtheria have been recorded in immunised children in Birmingham since 1925 down to the latest date for which the figures are obtainable?

Mr. Elliot

I am making inquiries from the local authority and will communicate with the hon. Member.
