HC Deb 28 June 1939 vol 349 cc439-40W
Mr. Bracken

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether he will arrange for at least one training ship to be sent to Newfoundland in order to provide opportunities for young Newfoundlanders to serve in the Royal Navy or the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve?

Colonel Llewellin

All men who are entered in the Royal Navy on stations abroad are brought to the United Kingdom for training and in fact a certain number of Newfoundlanders are at present in the country for training. It would not be practicable to start a naval training establishment in Newfoundland.

I regret that the Admiralty are unable to establish a training ship in Newfoundland for the purpose of setting up a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Division there.
