§ Mr. Hillsasked the Minister of Transport whether he will consider the application of the 30-miles per hour speed limit on the London-Edinburgh-Thurso trunk road (A 1) from its junction with the Pontefract-Knottingley road northwards, to its junction with Ferrybridge Road, in view of the volume of heavy vehicular and other traffic moving at high speed and constituting a grave danger to 1330W children attending school and other pedestrians; and is he aware that the speed limit was previously imposed at this point?
§ Captain WallaceI recently had under consideration the application of the 30-miles per hour speed limit to the length of road referred to by the hon. Member, and after careful consideration of all the relevant circumstances I came to the conclusion, with which I understand the local authorities agree, that this length of road could not properly be regarded as a road in a built-up area and that it should, accordingly, remain free from the speed limit.
I am aware that the speed limit was previously applied; it was removed by an Order made by the West Riding of Yorkshire County Council in 1936, to which my predecessor gave his consent in March, 1937.
