§ Mr. Simpsonasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education how many local education authorities in England and Wales are supplying school meals to necessitous children; and which local authorities in Middlesex are doing so?
Mr. LindsayTwo hundred and eighty-two local education authorities in England and Wales are providing sohd meals and/or milk for necessitous, under-nourished children. Of this number, 151 provide both solid meals and milk, four provide solid meals only and 127 provide milk only. Eight additional authorities are proposing to supply free milk or milk and meals. The Board are surveying the position in all areas and are making representations where necessary. Of the 13 authorities in Middlesex five provide milk only, seven provide solid meals and milk and the remaining authority has an approved scheme for the provision of milk which will shortly be put into operation.
