HC Deb 04 July 1939 vol 349 c1132W
Sir E. Makins

asked the Secretary of State for War whether the policy adopted during certain years of the post-war period of purchasing a proportion of remounts for the British Army from sources other than Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Eire, has now definitely been abandoned; whether he is satisfied that under present conditions it will be possible to obtain all the necessary remounts from Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Eire; and whether he is taking any steps to ensure that there is a sufficient reserve of horses available in this country for the Army and Yeomanry in the event of an emergency?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

The answer to the first and second parts of the question is, "Yes, Sir," except for requirements at certain stations abroad, which are either purchased locally or from the nearest Dominion. As regards the last part, it sufficient reserve is available.
