HC Deb 14 February 1939 vol 343 cc1572-3W
Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware of the bad condition of the main road in Bernera, Isle of Harris; and what proportion of the cost for its reconstruction will be granted by the Department of Agriculture for Scotland?

Mr. Colville

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative, but I understand that the ratepayers of Bernera have petitioned the county council for the reconstruction of certain roads in the island. In the event of the county council deciding to undertake the work the Department of Agriculture for Scotland would be prepared to consider the possibility of making a grant not exceeding 75 per cent, of the cost.

Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will make a statement regarding the condition of the pier at Northbay, Isle of Barra; and what steps he, or the county council of Inverness, is taking to have it reconstructed and brought into use under public ownership?

Mr. Colville

I am aware that representations have been made from time to time in favour of a pier at Northbay in place of the present boatslip, which is situated on land belonging to the Department of Agriculture for Scotland. I am not satisfied, however, that there is a case for a second steamer pier in the island of Barra. Inquiries are being made into the condition of the existing boatslip.
