HC Deb 14 February 1939 vol 343 c1572W
Sir J. Leech

asked the right hon. and gallant Member for Rye, as representing the Forestry Commissioners, whether he will develop the supply of edible-tuber aestivum in calcareous areas controlled by the Commissioners with a view to giving employment in cultivating a high-priced food for imports of which there is considerable demand?

Sir G. Courthope

The Commissioners consider that it is not within their province to undertake the cultivation of truffles, but they hope that the hardwoods which they are planting on calcareous soils may in due course increase the indigenous supply of that esculent.
