HC Deb 09 February 1939 vol 343 cc1158-9W
Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education the number of fully-qualified teachers who are unemployed at present; what are the prospects of their being placed in positions in the near future; and whether his Department is taking any steps to assist in securing posts for these unemployed teachers?

Mr. Lindsay

The Board have no means of ascertaining the number of teachers who are unemployed at any particular time, and they have no evidence to suggest that the amount of unemployment is such as would justify them in taking special steps with local education authorities or governing bodies to create additional teaching posts. The position will be affected by the raising of the school-leaving age on 1st September next.
