HC Deb 09 February 1939 vol 343 c1131W
Mr. Thorne

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he can give any information in connection with the charge of 55s. per pig for pigs sent by rail by the Pigs Marketing Board from Cornwall to London; and whether he has been in communication with the council of the Farmers' Union about the matter?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

As my hon. Friend the Minister of Pensions stated in reply to a question asked by my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for the Isle of Wight (Captain P. MacDonald) on 6th February, I have no detailed information about the journey of this particular pig, but I believe that the circumstances were exceptional. The matter is one for action by the industry, but I am informed that steps have now been taken which should prevent a recurrence.
