HC Deb 02 February 1939 vol 343 c383W
Major Stourton

asked the Attorney-General whether he can state the number of British subjects who have changed their surnames by deed-poll since the War?

The Attorney-General

Since 1st January, 1920, 14,038 British subjects have changed their surnames by Deeds Poll and enrolled such deeds in the Supreme Court. There is no obligation to enrol a Deed Poll by which a surname is changed and there are no figures available of the number of those who have changed their names but have not enrolled the deeds.
