HC Deb 02 February 1939 vol 343 cc394-5W
Mr. Denville

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to the demonstration which took place at a performance at the Royalty Theatre, Chester, of a play entitled Waiting for Lefty as part of the Chester drama festival; was the play licensed; and, in view of the likelihood of further breaches of the peace occurring if the play is again performed, what steps he is taking to prevent this?

Sir S. Hoare

I understand that this play was licensed by the Lord Chamberlain subject to the deletion of certain passages, one of which, however, was not omitted when the play was performed. In consequence, the persons responsible were prosecuted and bound over on payment of costs. No actual breach of the peace appears to have occurred, and I have no reason to anticipate that a breach will occur if the play is performed in accordance with the licensed script.
