HC Deb 14 December 1939 vol 355 cc1270-1W
Sir R. Glyn

asked the Minister of Supply whether steps have been taken to appoint salvage officers, and where; what are the duties of these officers; and whether he will appoint individuals with a knowledge of old iron and scrap metal who also have some knowledge of the collection and treatment of swill for feeding to pigs?

Colonel Llewellin

A Salvage Department was set up in the Ministry of Supply early in November, under a Controller of Salvage and two Deputies. Their duties are to organise and stimulate collection of scrap and salvage of all kinds, and to bring back into industry all material that can profitably be re-utilised. They are working in conjunction with local authorities, the salvage organisations of the fighting Services, and the Raw Materials Department of the Ministry, including the Controllers of Iron and Steel and Non-Ferrous Metals.

In conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture they are also stimulating the collection by local authorities, etc., of swill for pig feeding.
