HC Deb 12 December 1939 vol 355 c1066W
Sir H. Morris-Jones

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty why the rates of pay and allowances, including dependants' allowances, for a second lieutenant in the Royal Marines are less than those for the corresponding rank in the Army; and whether he is aware that the pay of 6s. 10d. per day, allowing for the minimum expenditure by an officer, makes it impossible to hold this commission without a private income; and whether this matter will be reconsidered?

Mr. Churchill

The pay of Royal Marine officers is based on that of Royal Naval officers according to age, service and relative rank. The emoluments of a junior Royal Marine officer on the permanent list are not comparable with those of a junior officer in the Army; the former is given a commission and pay immediately on entry, whereas the latter joins as a cadet. I cannot agree that the rate of pay given to probationary sub-lieutenants necessitates a private income.
