HL Deb 12 December 1939 vol 115 cc225-6WA
THE EARL OF TANKERVILLE

asked whether, in view of the fact that we are engaged in asserting our sovereignty by force of arms, His Majesty's Government will state why £35,000 of public money has been allocated to the support of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House).

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS (VISCOUNT HALIFAX)

The Royal Institute of International Affairs has undertaken, at the request of His Majesty's Government, to supply reviews and memoranda giving accounts, with comment when necessary, of political, social and economic events and tendencies as reflected by the Press of the world generally. The cost of performing this work will be met partly by the grant to which the noble Lord refers and partly by contributions generously afforded by the Institute from its own funds and by the University of Oxford. His Majesty's Government wish to stress the importance of the work in question and it is hoped that the matter supplied by the Institute will be of very considerable value to many Departments of His Majesty's Government engaged in the prosecution of the war, including those which direct the operations of the Armed Forces.

House adjourned at three minutes past six o'clock.
