Mr. Whiteasked the Minister of Labour whether he can state the latest estimate of the number of pensioners who were in registered employment as on the last convenient date?
§ Mr. E. BrownStatistics of the number of pensioners who are in employment at a particular date are not available. I am informed by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health that in England and Wales the approximate number of men and women, aged 65 and upwards, who obtained some insurable employment during: he first half of the year 1939, as sown by the receipt of contribution cards bearing one or more contributions for the period was 356,000. The corresponding figure for Scotland during the second half of the year 1938 was about 41,000. The numbers of such persons in employment at any particular date are substantially less than those figures.
