§ Mr. Sorensenasked the Secretary of State for War whether he intends to grant to the dependant mothers of sons serving in the Army the recently announced increased allowance of 6d. per day granted to wives; and whether he is aware that many mothers are as much in need of this extra allowance as the wives?
§ Sir V. WarrenderFamily allowance and dependants' allowance are based on different principles. In the latter case, rent is already taken into account in assessing net income for the purpose of determining the admissibility of a dependant's allowance at one of the standard rates. In cases of hardship due to high rents, where the normal allowance does not meet the case, application can be made to the Ministry of Pensions for a special allowance, which will be dealt with on the recommendation of the War Service Grants Advisory Committee.
