HC Deb 12 December 1939 vol 355 c1049W
Mr. C. Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he has prescribed any rule by which liquor shall not be supplied in the canteens and other institutions connected with the services outside the permitted hours of licensed premises in the same area?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Under the provisions of the Licensing Act, 1921, the ordinary permitted hours do not apply to Service canteens. The times at which intoxicating liquor may be sold in these places are fixed by commanding officers. The hours usually prescribed by commanding officers are less than the average permitted hours in civilian licensed premises.
