Foxasked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that dissatisfaction exists amongst the military members of the cable censorship staff with regard to the non-settlement of their travelling expenses incurred when they were called up at the end of August; that some of these officers came from the North of Scotland and, in consequence, expenses in some cases were heavy; that the non-settlement of these claims is causing hardship; and will he take appropriate action to remedy this grievance?
§ Sir V. WarrenderThere are no serving military personnel in the cable censorship staff. The normal Civil Service rule, which applies also to the retired officers 1051W employed on the cable censorship staff, is that individuals pay their own fares when travelling to take up duty on first appointment. In certain cases, however, letters of appointment included an undertaking to pay travelling expenses, and all admissible claims rendered in respect of this staff have been met. The majority of the individuals had claimed on an incorrect basis, and this caused delay.
