§ Sir W. Jenkinsasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether the dietist appointed by the Board is visiting schools; whether a fixed weekly or daily diet is recommended; if so, will he give particulars of such meals; and in how many schools has he changed the milk supplies to a dinner?
Mr. LindsayThe dietician appointed by the Board has been visiting feeding centres and schools since February, 1938. An important part of her functions is to suggest improvements in the dietary where the meals provided are unsatisfactory, but no fixed daily or weekly diet is recommended as the necessary constituents can be provided in a variety of ways. The provision of dinners, whether free or on payment, is primarily a matter for the local education authorities, but representations are made by the Board to the authorities where they consider the provision of dinners desirable. In such cases the dinners are usually given in addition to and not in substitution for the supply of milk.
