Mr. Ridley

asked the Minister of Transport how many tons of merchandise were conveyed by canal transport in 1913, 1920, and in the last year for which the information is available?

The total tonnage of traffic conveyed over the principal inland waterways in 1920 and 1938 was 16,304,000 tons and 12,952,000 tons respectively. Information is not available for the year I9I3

Mr. Ridley

asked the Minister of Transport how many miles of canals were being used for commercial purposes in 1913, 1920, and at the latest date for which the information is available; and how many miles of canals are now not so used?

According to the Report of the Royal Commission on Canals, 1909, the mileage of canals and inland navigations in use at that period in Great Britain was 3,822 miles. Comparable figures for later years are not available.
