HC Deb 03 April 1939 vol 345 cc2468-9W
Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Prime Minister whether the Italian Government have now accepted His Majesty's Government's view of the legal position with regard to the provisions of Article 11 of the St. Germain Convention relating to missionary activities; and whether the British and American missionaries who were requested to leave Abyssinia during 1937 have since been permitted to return?

Mr. Butler

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. As regards the second part, my Noble Friend is not aware that requests for permission to return to Italian East Africa have yet been made to the Italian authorities by any of the British or American missionaries who were requested to leave during 1937.
