asked His Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies what are the rates of wages in "praedial" (i.e., agricultural) labour reported by the Collector-General of Jamaica in his last received report as paid to men and women in the several parishes of the island?

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (THE MARQUESS OF DUFFERIN AND AVA)

The wage rates given for "praedial" workers in the latest report of the Collector-General in Jamaica, which relates to the year ended the 31st March, 1937, are as follows. Rates for women are given in five parishes only:

  • Kingston—2s. 6d. to 4s. a day.
  • St. Andrew—1s. 6d. to 3s. a day.
  • St. Thomas (Morant Bay Division)—2s. to 2s. 6d. a day.
  • Portland—men, 1s. 6d. to 3s. a day; women, is. to 3s. a day.
  • St. Mary—1s. 6d. to 2s. a day.
  • St. Ann—1s. 6d. to 1s. 9d. a day.
  • Trelawny—men, 1s. 3d. to 1s. 9d. a day; women, 9d. to 1s. a day.
  • St. James—1s. to 2s. 6d. a day.
  • Hanover—1s. 3d. to 2s. a day.
  • Westmoreland—2s. 6d. a day.
  • St. Elizabeth—men, 1s. 3d. to 2s. a day; women, 9d. to 1s. a day.
  • Manchester—men, 1s. 6d. to 2s. a day; women, 9d. to 1s. 6d. a day.
  • Clarendon—1s. to 2s. a day.
  • St. Catherine—men, 1s. 6d. to 2s. 6d. a day; women, 9d. to 1s. 3d. a day.
