asked the Minister of Labour whether he will state the average weekly number of payments made under the transitional payments in 1932–33 and 1933–34, together with the cost of administration per annum for both years, and also the average weekly number of payments made by the Unemployment Assistance Board in 1936 to 1937, and the cost of administration for that year?

Mr. E. Brown:

The average weekly number of payments made under the Transitional Payments Scheme during the financial years ended 31st March, 1933 and 1934, were 988,000 and 951,000, respectively, and the cost of administration by local authorities and the Ministry of Labour in those years was £3,385,982 and £3,740,233, respectively. During the year ended 31st March, 1937, payments of Unemployment Allowances averaged 600,000 per week and the cost of the administrative services of the Board, together with the cost of services rendered by the Ministry of Labour and other Government Departments, amounted to £4,413,689.
