Mr. Lawson

asked the Minister of Labour (1) whether he can state the average amount paid weekly to married men claiming unemployment allowances at the most recent rate;

(2) the average amount paid to single men claiming unemployment allowances at the most recent date;

(3) the total monthly amount paid in unemployment allowances at the most recent date;

(4) the average weekly payment made to adults claiming unemployment allowances at the most recent date?

Mr. E. Brown:

In the period of four weeks ended 26th March, 1938, the total amount paid at local offices of the Ministry of Labour in unemployment allowances (excluding sums in supplementation of unemployment benefit) was about £2,770,000, and the average weekly payment to adult men and women in receipt of allowances was 25s. 10d. and 13s. 11d., respectively. Separate figures are not available for married and single men.
