asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of persons who have applied for old age contributory pensions and have been refused, and also the same figures for widows' pensions during the past 12 months?

The number of claims for old age contributory pension received by the Department of Health from persons between the ages of 65 and 70 during the year ended 2nd June, 1938, was 24,816; the number of claims rejected was 1,588. The corresponding figures for widows' pensions are 9,269 and 1,132.
