HC Deb 14 June 1938 vol 337 c74W
Mr. Lunn

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he has any information to give the House as to the position of affairs in Newfoundland?

Lord Stanley

A full account of the work of the Commission of Government in 1937 was contained in the Annual Report of the Commission which was recently presented to Parliament as Cmd. 5741. This indicates that substantial improvement in conditions took place during the year.

I regret to say that there has recently been a set-back in the economic prospects for the immediate future as a result of trade difficulties affecting both the fishing and the paper industries, but the Governor reports that the revenue of the Island has so far been well maintained.
