HC Deb 02 June 1938 vol 336 cc2269-70W
Mr. Macquisten

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence whether he is aware that 1,000 tons of power alcohol were used at Gretna Munition Works every week during the War, and very large quantities were used at other places in the production of munitions; and what arrangements are being made for the supply thereof, in view of the tax now proposed?

Sir T. Inskip:

I assume that my hon. and learned Friend refers to industrial alcohol and not to power alcohol, as no quantities of the latter were authorised to be used in munition factories during the War. On this assumption I am aware of the facts stated by my hon. and learned Friend in the first part of the question. As regards the second part, I am informed that adequate arrangements have been made to cover the defence requirements of industrial alcohol, which is not affected by the new tax.
