HL Deb 27 July 1938 vol 110 c1288WA
LORD STRICKLAND

asked His Majesty's Government whether with reference to the relations between Church and State in Malta, recent consideration has been given to the Report of the Malta Royal Commission, 1931, and in particular to the following words of the Commissioners on page 164 of the same Report:— We have a belief, formed after the most earnest inquiry, that a Pastoral by the Bishops will be quite different in tone from the Pastoral of 1930. This belief has been one of the main considerations which have influenced us in recommending that a new election should be held. We cannot express too strongly our conviction upon this subject. It is founded upon long and friendly conversations with the Bishops and upon the desires expressed by Your Majesty's Government and the Holy See for good relations with one another and for peace in Malta. And whether information received by His Majesty's Government from Malta as to how the above promises were fulfilled, or otherwise, can be published.

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (THE MARQUESS OF DUFFERIN AND AVA)

His Majesty's Government do not propose to publish any further documents relating to any matters dealt with in the Report of the Royal Commission of 1931.

House adjourned at ten minutes past eight o'clock.
