HC Deb 20 July 1938 vol 338 cc2213-4W
Mr. Higgs

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that medical practitioners are very concerned at the intention of his Department to admit further alien doctors into this country and to allow them to practise here; and will he consider the advisability of not granting further permits?

Earl Winterton

I would refer my hon. Friend to the replies given in this matter on the 14th July to the hon. Member for Denbigh (Sir H. Morris-Jones) and the hon. Member for Dewsbury (Mr. Riley).

Mr. Kirby

asked the Home Secretary whether he can state the number of persons who have been admitted to this country from foreign countries during the past 12 months who intend to practise as doctors; whether he is aware that the medical profession strongly resents their entiy and consequent competition with them on a lower standard of training than is required here; and what steps he is taking to regulate the inflow of such doctors and to ensure that none are allowed to practise here unless already qualified to a degree equal to that expected in this country?

Earl Winterton

As regards the first part of the question, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on the 7th March to the hon. Member for the Moss Side Division of Manchester (Mr. W. R. Duckworth). As regards the last part of the question I would refer to the replies given on the 14th instant to the hon. Member for Denbigh (Sir H. Morris-Jones) and the hon. Member for Dewsbury (Mr. Riley).
