HC Deb 18 July 1938 vol 338 cc1816-7W
Mr. Storey

asked the Minister of Transport how many men are being employed in the construction and improvement of trunk roads; and whether any young men who have completed a course at an instructional centre have yet been placed in employment on such work in accordance with the arrangements made between himself and the Minister of Labour?

Mr. Burgin

The number of men employed on road works throughout the country is upwards of 20,000. The number employed solely on trunk roads could not be ascertained without a detailed analysis of all road improvement schemes to distinguish between trunk road and other schemes. As regards the second part of the question, I understand from my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour, that the information is not immediately available, but that he is making inquiries.
