Viscountess Astorasked the Home Secretary whether, in view of much present anxiety, he proposes to take any action to ensure that women who desire to do so may retain their British nationality on marriage to a foreigner?
§ Sir S. HoareI appreciate the considerations which the Noble Lady has in mind. As she knows, much attention has been given to this question, and it has been the subject of consultation at successive Imperial Conferences. At the conference held last year it was not found possible to reach agreement on an alteration of the existing law; and under the existing law there is no action I can take.
