HC Deb 21 December 1938 vol 342 cc2923-4W
Mr. Tinker

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that a large part of the East Lancashire road, Manchester to Liverpool, is unlighted; that recently there have been a number of accidents during the hours of darkness; that several local authorities are anxious to get a scheme to have it lighted; and will he give advice and assistance towards this purpose?

Mr. Burgin

I am aware that sections of this road are unlighted, and I have informed the responsible lighting authorities that I am prepared to make agreements with them whereby I would contribute 50 per cent. of the capital and maintenance costs of approved installations. So far I have not received any application from the lighting authorities, but I should be glad to do so, preferably for some comprehensive scheme providing for the lighting of a substantial length of the road.
