HC Deb 21 December 1938 vol 342 c2926W
Miss Wilkinson

asked the Minister of Transport whether he has any statement to make with regard to the proposed order removing barrow-men from the London streets, in view of the great hardship which would thus be caused to these hardworking men?

Mr. Burgin

The proposed restrictions on the use of certain important thoroughfares by itinerant tradesmen are part of the proposed "no-waiting" regulations which are intended to alleviate traffic congestion in those thoroughfares. The regulations will not affect the ordinary rounds-men delivering goods or street traders occupying pitches licensed by local authorities.

I have given notice that I shall be prepared to receive representations concerning the proposed regulations up to the 31st January, 1939. All representations received by that date will be carefully considered before I reach any decision as to the precise nature and scope of the regulations and as to the date when they shall come into effect.
