HC Deb 21 December 1938 vol 342 c2914W
Mr. Temple Morris

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether it is the custom of governors in the Crown Colonies to hold levées on the King's Birthday, and equally to ensure a public holiday on which no estate work will be done; and whether, if this is not the case, he will consider suggesting to the governors concerned the desirability of adopting this procedure?

Mr. M. MacDonald

Yes, Sir. Levees are held in some Dependencies where circumstances permit. In certain places the day is declared a public holiday, but in this respect practice differs in different Colonies. I am satisfied that every effort is made to associate all classes of the community with the celebration, and I do not think it necessary to make such representations as my hon. Friend suggests.
