HC Deb 12 December 1938 vol 342 c1639W
Sir I. Albery

asked the Minister of Transport what action is being taken to prevent the erection of illuminated advertisement signs in positions likely to increase the danger of night driving on motor roads?

Mr. Burgin

Highway authorities are empowered to require the removal of any object which so closely resembles a traffic sign that it might reasonably be taken for such a sign. But neither the local authorities nor I have any general power to prohibit the use of illuminated advertisements on the grounds that they may cause danger at night, and I would add that I have not hitherto received any evidence that such signs are an appreciable cause of accidents.
