asked the Secretary for Mines whether he will state the quantity and percentage proportion of coal cut by machinery in each mining district of Great Britain during the year 1937?

The information is as follows:

240,409,436 tons; the output of coal per person employed below-ground was 390 tons, and per person employed above and below-ground 304 tons. The corresponding figures for South Wales and Monmouth were 37,773,013 tons, 334 tons and 278 tons, respectively.

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he will state the total wage and salary bill and the earnings per person employed in the coal-mining industry in Great Britain and South Wales and Monmouthshire, respectively, during the year 1937?

The estimated total wages bill in the coal-mining industry in Great Britain during the year 1937 was £114,105,000 and the earnings per wage-earner employed, £149 10s, 1d. (including the value of allowances in kind): corresponding figures for South Wales and Monmouth were £19,597,000 and £145 16s. 10d.
